Fatal Crash - SH1 Atiamuri - Bay of Plenty
Police and emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash that has closed SH1 north of Atiamuri near the Bull Ring Cafe.
The crash which was reported at 2.30 a.m. involved a car and a truck. Both vehicles caught fire and it is believed there have been a number of fatalities.
The road is going to be closed for a number of hours.
Northbound traffic is being diverted west onto SH30 at Atiamuri to Whakamaru, then north on SH32 back to Tokoroa. Signage is being arranged at Tokoroa for southbound traffic using the same route.
Southbound traffic on SH30 from Rotorua is being diverted north to Tokoroa then west and south on 32 & 30, back to Atiamuri.
No further release will be made until the scene has been processed.
