Dunedin responds to continued rain

Update #3 1.50pm

Dunedin (Tuesday, 20 November 2018) – Dunedin residents are being asked to cut back on showers and use of washing machines to ease pressure on wastewater systems.

Continued rain is putting pressure on wastewater pipes and pumping stations. In heavy rain, stormwater gets into parts of the wastewater system, increasing the amount of water flowing through.

DCC Civil Defence Controller Sandy Graham says, “We’d like people to limit their use of showers, baths and washing machines until mid evening when hopefully the main effects of the rain are over. We want to do what we can to limit any overflows.”

The Dunedin Emergency Operations Centre will open at 2pm so the DCC and Civil Defence can monitor and co-ordinate the situation.

Sandbags

Mosgiel and South Dunedin residents who are concerned about flooding or who have had issues before can collect sandbags from the sites below. If sandbags are needed in other areas, sites will be arranged.

Mosgiel
• Memorial Park car park beside the Mosgiel Memorial Gymnasium, Gordon Road, available now
• Hotel Taieri car park, corner of Burns and King Street, available now

South Dunedin
• Ice Stadium car park, Victoria Road, from 2.30pm

In most circumstances people will need to fill their own bags. Volunteers will also be on site to help. Anyone who would like to volunteer is welcome.

Older people and those with mobility issues who are unable to pick up their own bags can call the DCC on 03 477 4000 and we will try to arrange delivery.
