Keep your eyes on the road this December

"Keep your eyes on the road this December"

Nelson Police will be focusing on fighting driver distraction this December.

Last year distraction was a factor in 36 fatal road crashes and 192 serious injury crashes in New Zealand.

“We still see far too many people using mobile phones while driving.
If you’re looking at a screen, you’re not watching the road,” says Senior Sergeant Scott Richardson, Area Manager: Prevention.

Police focus is on the four behaviours which are the main contributors of death and injury on New Zealand roads: a lack of restraints, impairment such as alcohol or fatigue, distraction, and speed.

“We will be doing spot and stop operations, where Police spotters will be watching for people not wearing seatbelts, running lights and using mobile phones.”

“Over 30 notices were issued on Rocks Road, Nelson just last week. Behaviours need to change for everyone’s safety."

“As we head into the holiday season there will be increased traffic on the roads, so it’s important to be patient and keep yourself and other road users safe by driving to the conditions, not driving impaired or distracted, and ensuring everyone in your vehicle is wearing a seatbelt."

“We want to make sure everyone makes it through to a safe and happy Christmas.”
