Councils Investigate Inner Harbour Oil Spill

A small spill of oil from a stormwater pipe into Napier’s inner harbour is a good reminder to local industries to check their operations.

A discharge of diesel/ oil (hydrocarbons) was reported at the western end of Napier’s inner harbour on Monday 8 August.

Napier City and Hawke’s Bay Regional Council oil spill responders investigated the incident, and narrow the source of the spill to a premise attached to the Napier City Council stormwater system.

Regional Council group manager of Policy and Regulation Katrina Brunton urges staff to check their stormwater on site to make sure everything is operating correctly.

“If your premise has an oil interceptor or if you are aware of an accidental or intentional spill in this area, please contact HBRC’s pollution hotline on 0800 108 838,” says Ms Brunton.

“Commercial and industrial operators in the affected West Quay area should expect to see Regional Council and Napier City investigating officers at their premises seeking potential sources to locate the source of the pollution and stop it as soon as we can.”

Elsewhere in the city, this incident is a good reminder to ensure oil spill response plans, spill kits, bunding and interceptors have been cleaned to ensure no pollution escapes any business or facility into the environment.
