The tourism scene in Taupō is getting a fresh boost with the official launch of the Young Taupō Tourism Crew, a new network designed by and for young professionals to nurture the region's next generation of tourism leaders.
The group's first meetup was held yesterday, bringing together young professionals from across Taupō's diverse tourism businesses to connect, share experiences, and build valuable industry relationships.
Established to tackle issues around staff retention and career development in the tourism sector, the Young Taupō Tourism Crew aims to foster a sense of belonging and community for emerging industry talent.
"This group exists to grow and retain talent within Taupō's tourism industry by creating a relaxed, social environment where young professionals can connect, learn, and feel part of something bigger," said Patrick Dault, General Manager of Destination Great Lake Taupō, who is supporting the initiative. "In a sector where staff turnover is high and career paths aren't always clear, we're building belonging through enjoyable, social experiences that naturally lead to professional growth. And what better place to launch this initiative than one of the most welcoming places on Earth?"
Jordyn Clarkson, Marketing Automation Co-ordinator at Destination Great Lake Taupō, added: “When I came to Taupo, I wasn’t sure were to go to meet other young tourism professionals, now with this group I have people I can connect and learn with."
Developed and driven by young tourism professionals, the Young Taupō Tourism Crew will organise regular social gatherings, expert speaker sessions, and hands-on experiences highlighting local tourism offerings.
Tourism businesses in Taupō are encouraged to connect their younger team members with this initiative. It represents an investment not just in individual careers but also in the sustainability of the region’s tourism industry.
"If you run a tourism business and employ young professionals, definitely connect them with the Young Taupō Tourism Crew. It's essential to retaining young talent in our region—and your future, our future, might just depend on it," added Dault.
Tourism operators interested in involving their young team members in future events can contact Patrick Dault.
