No Breaches Found In Kaipara Alcohol Compliance Checks
In a recent joint operation between the National Public Health Service – Northern Region Compliance Officers and Police, Controlled Purchase Operations were carried out across the Kaipara area with no breaches found.
The operation focussed on targeting off-licensed premises such as grocery stores, supermarkets, and bottle stores and involved supervised volunteers aged 15 and 17 attempting to purchase alcohol from 18 licensed outlets.
Sergeant Tai Patrick, Alcohol Harm Prevention Officer for Whangārei Police, says it was pleasing there were no sales made to the underage volunteers.
“This is an excellent outcome that demonstrates strong compliance with the law.
“It shows that licensed premises are taking their responsibilities seriously and have effective systems in place to prevent alcohol sales to minors,” he says.
“The consequences of failing to do so can be severe, including financial penalties and the potential suspension or cancellation of a liquor licence.”
Alcohol-related harm costs New Zealand an estimated $9 billion annually.
Simple actions—like checking for ID—play a vital role in reducing that harm.
Controlled Purchase Operations will continue throughout the year and may extend to include on-licensed premises such as bars and restaurants.
