Local Government Passes Buck

Local Government boffins look set to dump community disenchantment off onto central Government politicians.

The 86 local authorities from Around New Zealand have gathered in Auckland today for the Local Government New Zealand [LGNZ] annual conference.

It will be calling for a new relationship with the Government and for more consultation by Parliament on a broader range of issues.

LGNZ president, Kerry Marshall, is reportedly saying communities are losing tolerance for government. He says communities demand a greater say in major issues which affect their daily lives.

The pass-the-buck conference follows hard on the heels of a Scoop report on the Consumer Magazine expose which cites local Government’s biggest challenges to be:
* transport and traffic problems
* inefficient and untrusted communication
* remarkably high rates...
Consumer stated councils are failing and nowhere is this more so than in Auckland.
