Hapu Management Plan Signed
Auckland City Council - City Scene
An agreement to develop a Hapu Management Plan has been signed by kaumatua and rangatira of Ngati Rehua, Ngati Wai ki Aotea and Auckland City.
The plan will benefit both parties. It will identify the hapu structures and sacred areas that have special significance in exercising Ngati Rehua's custodian role, which will be a resource management trigger for the public, the council and Ngati Rehua.
Hori Parata from Ngati Wai thanked the council for being the "bravest" to take this step. Earlier attempts with local authorities in this area had met with little success, he said.
Ngati Rehua, Ngati Wai ki Aotea chairperson Michael Beazley said the relationship between the hapu and the council has always been positive. This would enhance it even more, he said.
The plan was signed for Auckland City by deputy
mayor Dr Bruce Hucker and chief executive Bryan
Taylor.
