PM Backs Lotto Salary Review - The Prime Minister Jenny Shipley says Lotto boss’ salary appears too high. She is welcoming calls for the State Services Commission to review the salaries of those who manage Lotto.

Fire Service Says Hotels Not Perfect - The Fire Service has stated hotels set to accommodate world leaders during APEC are fire safety compliant but some leave a lot to be desired. There is less than two weeks to go before the summit. The Fire Service says the larger top hotels are built to the highest standards but the smaller ones are not. It says it is too late to fix the problems before APEC and it hopes this will not reflect badly on Auckland.

East Timorese Go To Polls - The people of East Timor are less than an hour and a half away from going to the polls to determine the future of their troubled country. Voting in the referendum will close at about 8 this evening our time. The results are expected in about one week. Indonesia has suggested it will allow independence even if the autonomy package is turned down. That move has been welcomed by independence activists. Meanwhile just hours after conflicting sides in the region signed a peace pact to curb the violence, two pro-Indonesian militiamen have been hacked to death.
