The Labour Party looks set to achieve considerable gains in electoral support throughout Manukau City at the forthcoming General Election. The surge in support for Labour comes at the expense of National and New Zealand First.

"I think what we are seeing is an acute erosion in support for National and a wholesale collapse in support for New Zealand First," said Labour's Manurewa Electorate Campaign Manager, Daniel Newman.

Labour holds three general seats in Manukau City - Mangere (Taito Phillip Field), Manukau East (Ross Robertson) and Manurewa (George Hawkins). All three Labour incumbent MPs are likely to be returned with increased majorities.

"Labour has worked hard to ensure that the residents of Manukau City enjoy outstanding parliamentary representation. Local residents are very keen to support the policy agenda which will be pursued by the incoming Labour-led Government," said Daniel Newman.

Candidates associated with the National/Act regime are struggling to achieve electoral traction in Manukau City. They are promoting social policies which are unpopular with local residents, such as charging market rents for state houses, privatising health care services and failing to address problems associated with law and order.

"In Counties Manukau there has been a 165% rise in violent crime - under National. In Counties Manukau there has been a 243% rise in recorded aggravated robberies - under National. In Counties Manukau 93 out of every 100 recorded burglaries go unsolved - under National. It's not hard to see why local residents aren't voting National this year," said Daniel Newman.
