Auckland Youth Suicide Survivors To Be Surveyed

Young suicide survivors will be asked why they tried to kill themselves.

The question will be part of a youth suicide study, conducted by researchers from Auckland University's Injury Prevention Research Centre.

The survey is designed to find out why New Zealand has one of the highest youth suicide rates in the world.

One in four New Zealanders aged 15 to 24, killed because of injury, die of suicide.

Researchers need to find out what young people think about their suicide attempts and their views on how to achieve good mental health.

The study will examine what triggers suicide. Such as: relationship problems, parent problems, friends, schools, drugs and alcohol.

Pakeha youth will be studied separate to Pacific youth. A Maori youth study will be conducted next year.
