Sounds Selector Magazine Hits the Streets

Release Sounds Music Stores

Auckland – Monday, 6th March 2000 – New Zealand’s leading music store Sounds today launched the country’s highest circulation modern music and culture magazine, Selector.

The monthly magazine is targeted at the youth market and contains editorial on music-related lifestyle and product information. Selector will focus on major interviews and features and will also deliver New Zealand's largest music review section. “Selector is designed to bring together the cutting edge of alternative and mainstream culture from New Zealand and around the globe,” says Soundsnz Mark Tierney.

“Selector is distributed directly through Sounds stores,” says Tierney. “That way, the magazine’s audience is really going to be self-selecting. Every month, over 200,000 people walk through Sounds doors in the 47 Sounds stores nationwide. This physical presence makes the ideal magazine distribution network, because we’re meeting music buyers on their own ground.”

Selector will also have an online presence through delivering rich content to soundsnz.com. Editorial on the site will be updated daily, including news on music, events, celebrities, reviews, art, television and competitions.

“It’s a fully integrated media experience, and extends the ‘clicks and mortar’ relationship between Sounds stores and soundsnz.com,” adds Tierney.
Editor Steve Adams, formerly of local modern culture magazine Lava, says Selector’s scale makes it exciting: “It’s easily the highest circulation of any magazine in this space. It’s going to appeal to readers because it’s independent, credible and free.”

“Sounds have charged us with cutting through the industry hoopla,” says Adams. “The editorial tone is one of authoritative criticism, aimed at giving readers the real deal.”
