BIA Chairman Has Retired

Sir George Chapman retired from the Building Industry Authority on 31 March 2000 after completing his third term as Chairman.

"As Foundation Chairman of the Authority Sir George made a tremendous contribution not only to the building industry but to all New Zealanders for the smooth introduction of legislation that reformed building control. Under his leadership the Authority stayed strongly focused on the Act's intent in providing safe and healthy buildings for everyone", said Dr Bill Porteous, Chief Executive of the Authority.

"Sir George firmly established the reputation of the Building Industry Authority as one of the most advanced agencies of its type in the world", Dr Porteous continued. "During his 8 years as Chairman, the Authority has gained a reputation as a provider of consistent and considered advice and service to the Government and people of New Zealand."

Sir George was appointed Chairman of the Authority by Hon. Graeme Lee, Minister of Internal Affairs, on 15 February 1992 following the passing of the Building Act 1991. He and seven members of the Authority were charged with the responsibility of implementing a totally new building control system.

He was reappointed in May 1994 and April 1997 by Internal Affairs Ministers Hon. Warren Cooper and Hon. Jack Elder respectively.

Authority member Frank Allen of Wellington is Acting Chairman until such time as the Minister of Internal Affairs makes a formal appointment.

The Building Industry Authority is an independent Crown entity established in 1992 to manage New Zealand's building legislation.
