Little Change in Residential Building Activity
There were 1,397 new dwelling units authorised in February 2001, according to Statistics New Zealand. The number of new dwellling units authorised in February 2001 increased 3.7 per cent from January 2001 when adjusted for seasonal variation, however the trend in the number authorised is flat.
The Auckland region had 545 new dwelling units authorised in February 2001, compared with 580 authorised in February 2000. There were 204 new dwelling units authorised in the Canterbury region, compared with 217 authorised in February 2000. In the Wellington region, 125 new dwelling units were authorised, compared with 174 authorised in February 2000.
The value of non-residential building consents issued for February 2001 was $172.0 million. This follows values of $191.0 million for January 2001 and $214.6 million for December 2000. At $40.8 million, the social, cultural and religious buildings category was the largest contributor to the February 2001 total.
