Marketing On Shoestring

A tiny subscription newsletter is going to single-handedly upskill New Zealand's small business owners in marketing, according to its editor.

Marketing Mentor is the culmination of a dream held by marketing/PR consultant Carol Wollaston, who recognised early on that small businesses seldom call on consultants, but often are in most need of the expertise. A Business in the Community mentor, she has dispensed advice to all kinds of small business, and decided to spread the word in a more formal way.

Marketing Mentor is a four page marketing tutorial, packed with tips, case studies, practical advice and clear explanations of marketing activities. A key feature is the Kickstart Checklist on the back, which requires readers to plan and implement upcoming marketing activities, and evaluate the success of past efforts.

"We have created a tool for small business that is practical and objective. While our specialty is public relations, we have called on other specialist marketers to address all the areas small business need to know about," she says.

Currently in printed form, Marketing Mentor will suit the small business owners who do their best thinking away from their desks. "It's supported by a website (www.marketingmentor.co.nz) and there is an on-line version available for those who prefer it," she says. "Because it's not full of advertising, the content is pure information."

At around $5.50 per month, Marketing Mentor is the cheapest marketing advice available to small business.
