Issues For An Old Culture In A New Century - New Zealand Leader To Speak At NZPI Conference

Sir Tipene O'Regan, Ngai Tahui tribal leader; Treaty settlement negotiator, academic historian and author; commercial director and indigenous development strategist, will be giving a keynote address to the New Zealand Property Institute inaugural conference being held in Christchurch May 16-18 at the Hotel Grand Chancellor.

Sir Tipene will give an address on "Property and Investment: Issues for an Old Culture in a New Century".

New Zealand Property Institute (NZPI) CEO, Conor English, said today," Sir Tipene has been, and continues to be, one of New Zealand most important leaders. He has done much to progress the prospects and opportunities for his people, and is widely recognised as an astute, progressive businessperson.

"He has been involved in some of the more interesting and complex property issues over recent years. His presentation will provide an insight, prospective and wisdom that will be unique. It is an honor to have him speak," Mr. English said today.

Sir Tipene O'Regan is a company director and academic and a well-known figure in the area of Maori economic development. He was a long serving past Chairman of the Ngai Tahu Maori Trust Board until 1996. He served as the foundation Chairman of Ngai Tahu Holdings Corporation from 1991 and as a director of a number of Ngai Tahu companies and subsidiaries until he retired from the Ngai Tahu Group in 2000. From 1989 until August 2000 he was Chairman of the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission and a director of various of the Commission's subsidiaries. He is Chairman of Sealord Group Ltd, The Escorial Company Ltd and a director of Meridian Energy Ltd, Whale Watch Kaikoura Ltd and Kutai Investments Ltd.

Sir Tipene is a past director of TVNZ Ltd and a former board member of the BCNZ and of the NZ Conservation Authority. He was recently appointed to the Board of the London based Marine Stewardship Council and sits on the Executive Board of the Law of the Sea Institute. He is Upoko of Te Rununga o Awarua (Bluff).

Sir Tipene has taught post-graduate history for many years at the University of Canterbury on a part-time basis. He holds the degree of D.Litt (Hons.Causa) from Canterbury and has recently been appointed to a Senior Research Fellowship in the University. In 1999 he was made an Associate of the Australian Maritime College at which he contributes to the MBA programme. He is Patron of the Christchurch Arts Festival and a Trustee of the Prince of Wales Trust.
