Protection Against 2nd Rate Security Operators
Collective Formed To Protect Against 2nd Rate Security Operators
Despite Government reassurances that the number of home invasions is on the way down, people are looking even more closely at ways of protecting their property and personal safety in their homes. ‘Fly by night’ operators (often unqualified and unlicensed) are cashing in on this trend and offering cheap alarm packages.
Some companies are offering conditional ‘free’ installations that do not always have customers’ security needs as top priority. Many of these require customers to sign up for a long term monitoring contract, which may reduce flexibility further down the track. Often customers are offered the most basic solution without assessment of their actual needs, and end up with a system that does not provide adequate property, fire and personal safety protection. Many are installed by inexperienced contractors with little commitment to ongoing backup and service.
Sub-standard equipment, or an incorrectly installed alarm, is easily disarmed, meaning that homeowners are effectively left with a fraction of the protection they thought they were paying for. To counter this, a new group – Security Professionals – has been formed to provide an alternative for customers looking at home security options. Formed initially as a means of collectively marketing smaller businesses, the group also aims to raise standards within the industry, and flush out shoddy operators trying to make a quick buck out of home security.
The strength and credibility of belonging to a
national group, combined with the commitment and local
knowledge of independent companies, will be the point of
difference for customers who are interested in real security
and lifestyle solutions. All members are established
businesses in their area, and are committed to a high level
of quality, service and long term support.
“As a group,
we offer our customers a real point of difference,” says
committee member Scott Carter, of Auckland based Matrix
Security “We are committed to providing quality products and
services, combined with local knowledge and a commitment to
provide all customers with the correct home security for
their needs”.
One of the driving forces behind Security Professionals is the desire to promote high levels of service. “There are so many offers on the market these days, and what we want to do is to establish a set of standards that our customers can depend on,” says Mr Carter
“We are constantly finding alarms have been installed by people who are obviously unqualified or simply don’t know what they are doing.” he says. “Many people don’t realise that if an alarm is installed incorrectly, it can easily be disarmed by burglars. We want to underline the importance of getting a licensed company to install the alarm, to ensure it is as effective as possible.
“Alarms are so commonplace now that most people don’t really react when they hear a car or house alarm anywhere,” says Scott Carter. “For this reason it is important to have an independent company monitor your alarm, so that if it does go off, someone will respond.”
Security Professionals currently has nearly 50 members from Northland to Invercargill.
