Industry New Zealand Supports Wellington Fashion Festival

Industry New Zealand is supporting the Wellington Fashion Festival as part of its commitment to the development of the New Zealand fashion industry.

The funding of $45,000 over three years will go towards professional development courses and seminars and an Industry New Zealand Fashion Awards to be phased in from next year. The nation-wide award will promote best practice in the fashion industry, Industry New Zealand Chief Executive Neil Mackay says.

Support for the Wellington festival, which runs this year from September 12 to September 16, follows funding for the L’Oreal New Zealand Fashion Week in Auckland from October 23-28.

The Auckland festival will focus on international markets and is expected to attract media and buyers from major international markets and retail outlets. The Wellington festival is a retail-based event focusing on the domestic market. Both markets are critical for a viable fashion industry, says Mr Mackay.

“Without a healthy domestic base, the fashion industry would not have the capacity to become a significant export earner.

“With an annual export value of about $247 million in the year ended March 2001, fashion is one of New Zealand’s most promising creative industries,” Mr Mackay says.

Industry New Zealand assists in a range of major projects designed to enhance business growth. It aims to identify and remove barriers and to make the most of opportunities like the Wellington Fashion Festival and the L’Oreal New Zealand Fashion Week.
