Senior Doctors Union Reach New Membership Peak

MEDIA STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE,
FRIDAY 24 AUGUST 2001

“Senior Doctors Union Reach New Membership Peak”

“Senior doctors have reached a new peak in their union membership with it increasing for the first time over 2000,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today.
“We are a young union formed in 1989. In our early years membership was around 1400, about two-thirds of our potential. Since the mid-1990s there has been steady growth and now it is over 90%.”

“Our continued membership growth is directly linked to the gains and protections we have achieved through collective bargaining, enforcement of conditions and strong defence of a high quality accessible public health system. Interestingly some of this more recent growth includes GPs confirming that we are not just a hospital based organisation.”

“This membership level confirms that we are highly representative of salaried senior doctors and that the government, Health Ministry and health managers need to take our advice very seriously,” concluded Mr Powell.
