Clearance Application From Ascot Hospital

Issued 15 November

Commission Receives Clearance Application From Ascot Hospital

The Commerce Commission has received an application from Ascot Hospital and Clinics Limited for clearance under the Commerce Act to acquire assets or shares currently owned by Mercy Hospital Auckland Limited, excluding the St Joseph's Mercy Hospice.

Both companies are members of the New Zealand Private Hospitals Association, and provide general hospital services.

Ascot's shareholders include Integrated Hospitals Limited, Calan Heathcare Properties Trust, doctors and other small investors.

All of the shares in Mercy are owned by Sisters of Mercy Auckland Charities Limited.

In considering this application, the Commission's role is to determine whether the merged company has the effect to substantially lessen competition in the market.

A public version of Ascot's application is available on request from the Commerce Commission.
