“Unions are more relevant today than ever before to Pacific
workers,” said
Council of Trade Unions Komiti Pasefika
co-convenor Noora Samuela today.
A union tent at tomorrow’s Pasifika Festival at Western Springs, Auckland will be the base for a range of unions representing Pacific workers.
“It is important for unions to be responsive to and inclusive of Pacific workers’ issues,” said Noora Samuela.
Noora Samuela said issues for Pacific workers included workplace health and safety and low pay.
“The recent death of Terua Tearoa on an Auckland construction site has highlighted the fact that too many Pacific workers are the victims of workplace accidents,’ he said.
“Pacific workers do not like to challenge their employer on an individual basis. We support the collective way of unions.”
The CTU tent at the Pasifika Festival will have information about workplace issues and joining unions.
