Brian Chamberlin awarded Life Member of FFNZ

19 July 2002 PR094/02 Brian Chamberlin awarded Life Member of FFNZ

Former Federated Farmer's President Brian Chamberlin was awarded Life Membership of FFNZ at the Federation's National Conference in Christchurch this week.

Mr Chamberlin's distinguished service to the Federation has included the positions of President 1987-90, Chairman of the Meat and Wool Council 1979-81 and Auckland Provincial President 1977-79.

Mr Chamberlin took a leading role in the Federation and agri-politics when New Zealand and farming woke to the realisation that "market signals" rather than government intervention should dictate the direction of agriculture.

As well as his involvement in the Federation, Mr Chamberlin was Vice President of the International Federation of Agricultural Producers from 1986-90, and has represented New Zealand on a wide variety of international business organisations.

Mr Chamberlin has held a number of diplomatic positions including New Zealand Special Agricultural Trade Envoy 1990-91, Councillor for Agriculture at the New Zealand High Commission in London 1992-93 and has been a member of the International Policy Council on Agriculture, Food and Trade since 1994.

A staunch advocate of free trade, Mr Chamberlin published "Farming and Subsidies - Debunking the Myths" in 1996 and a sequel "Five Years On". These publications continue to have a key role in communicating New Zealand's position in the international arena.
