Guest Nights Continue to Increase
Guests spent 1.6 million nights in short-term commercial accommodation during June 2002, according to Statistics New Zealand. This figure is 7 percent above the June 2001 level.
All regions recorded higher guest nights in June 2002 than in June 2001. Both North Island and South Island guest nights increased by 7 percent. The North Island accounted for 65 percent of total guest nights. All accommodation types recorded higher guest nights in June 2002 than in June 2001.
Backpackers/hostels recorded the largest increase in guest nights, up 15 percent from June 2001. Excluding caravan parks/camping grounds, the occupancy rate for short-term commercial accommodation in June 2002 was 41 percent, up from 39 percent in June 2001.
