Astounding & Innovative Engineering Wins Golds

ASTOUNDING & INNOVATIVE ENGINEERING WINS GOLDS

Engineering described as astounding and innovative has won three golds for two firms of consulting engineers in this year's INNOVATE NZ awards, presented by the Association of Consulting Engineers New Zealand (ACENZ).

"Astounding management" of what the CEO of client, Transit NZ, described as "one of the most technically difficult engineering projects ever undertaken in this country" won gold for Opus International Consultants Ltd for its civil engineering work on the Candy's Bend to Starvation Point section of SH73 in the Arthur's Pass.

Beca Carter Hollings Ferner Ltd received golds for work on two projects. The first used innovative computer modelling to improve the energy efficiency of Wellington Regional Council's water treatment plants and reservoirs, producing significant cost savings for the client. The second was working in conjunction with architects Craig Craig Moller on the design and construction of a new sky tower for the former Portuguese colony of Macau, near Hong Kong.

A total of 19 awards were made, covering projects from Auckland to Invercargill and three offshore projects. Opus also won two silver and two merit awards, and Beca one silver and two merits apiece.

The INNOVATE NZ awards are judged by a panel of industry leaders and seek to highlight excellence in consulting engineering and exceptionally innovative solutions juggling environmental, social, physical and budgetary factors for clients. Evidence of an excellent client/consultant relationship is a pre-requisite for winning an award. The projects must have been completed for at least 12 months before bring eligible for entry, to ensure they meet client objectives.
