Kiwi travellers will soon be able to experience the exceptional comforts and innovative features of Singapore Airlines’ new Boeing 777-200ER long-range aircraft.

The new two-class aircraft has been retrofitted with the state-of-the-art SpaceBed in the Raffles Class cabin. It will service Singapore Airlines’ Christchurch to Singapore route from December 2002.

The B777-200ER has 30 Raffles Class seats and 255 Economy Class seats.

Singapore Airlines’ General Manager New Zealand, Foo Chai Woo, says the introduction of the aircraft to New Zealand reinforces the airline’s commitment to product and service innovation, to offer its customers the world’s best travel experience.

“The two-class B777-200ER aircraft better meets the needs of New Zealand’s corporate and leisure customers,” he says.

“Singapore Airlines is very proud to continue its tradition of service innovation on its South Island services.”

Raffles Class passengers will enjoy the unprecedented comforts and style of the new generation SpaceBed. This state-of-the-art seat is the largest business class bed in the sky, stretching out 78 inches or 198cm in length. When fully deployed, it becomes flat and inclined at an angle of only 8 degrees when the aircraft is cruising.

The SpaceBed’s unique seat cushion can be extended or retracted by the passenger to ensure optimum support of the body in virtually all seating positions. The seat width, with the armrests lowered, is an impressive 69cm or 27 inches.

The new Raffles Class 2-2-2 seat configuration means that every passenger will get either a window seat or an aisle seat.

Discreet personal screens can be adjusted to the preferred height to maintain privacy.

Together with the SpaceBed comes Singapore Airlines’ new-generation inflight entertainment system, KrisWorld, which offers Raffles Class passengers an unbeatable selection of 25 DVD movies, 30 hours of short features, 50 CD albums and multi-player games on 10.4 inch or 26.5cm high-resolution screens.

Based on the Matsushita Avionics’ MAS3000 system, KrisWorld offers audio-video on demand in all classes, allowing customers to play or pause, fast-forward and rewind at any time.

A new AC power system has been built into the SpaceBed, enabling laptops to be powered through a normal power cord.

Economy class has a 3-3-3 configuration. Passengers enjoy adjustable lumbar support and seat bottom height, flush headrest, more personal space and stowage compartments, and a personal video screen with enhanced resolution and touch-screen capability. The seat pitch is 82.5cm or 33 inches and seat width a generous 46.5cm or 18.5 inches.

Singapore Airlines’ Christchurch to Singapore service, which currently uses the A340 aircraft, operates on Monday, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday. A fifth weekly flight will commence service in September, to depart Christchurch on Wednesdays.

In addition to the Christchurch service, Singapore Airlines operates a daily B747-400 service between Auckland and Singapore.
