NZ Post Service One Of The Best In The World

For immediate release 12 September 2002

New Zealand Post’s Service One Of The Best In The World

New Zealand Post announced today that 96.1% of mail was delivered on time during the 12 months to 30 June 2002, a result that puts service standards for mail delivery in New Zealand among the best in the world and improves on last year’s result.

Chief Executive, Elmar Toime, said New Zealand Post’s mail service standards were ahead of those of La Poste in France (77%), Royal Mail (86.6%), Ireland’s An Post (87%), the United States Postal Service (94%), Finland’s Posti (94.7%), Post Danmark (94.9%), Sweden’s Posten (95.6%) and Australia Post (95.5%).

"We don’t claim to be perfect, but New Zealanders can have confidence that they are getting a world-class mail service from New Zealand Post.”

The 12-month mail service result, independently measured by Research International NZ Ltd, exceeds New Zealand Post’s own target of 95% for on time delivery of Standard and FastPost mail.

"The result is ahead of last year’s 95.7% service performance and reflects the hard work of our posties, mailroom and transport employees who ensure the successful delivery of over one billion items of mail each year, said Mr Toime.

“We expect to make further improvements in delivery standards this year through new systems and business processes for managing changes to delivery points, redirections, updating technology sorting plans and circulation changes.

“Four years after deregulation, New Zealand has the most competitive postal market in the world. We continue to lead the market by providing ready access for all New Zealanders to one of the cheapest postal rates with one of the strongest service performance standards in the developed world.”

Standard Post has a service target of cross-town delivery the next working day and delivery within three working days for letters between urban centres. FastPost has a service target of delivery the next working day between major towns and cities across New Zealand.
