ACC Claimants’ Code Welcome, But Lacks Teeth

MEDIA RELEASE

11 December 2002

ACC Claimants’ Code Welcome, But Lacks Teeth

“The new code to protect ACC claimants’ rights provides standards against which ACC can start to rebuild its reputation for fairness,” said Council of Trade Unions president Ross Wilson today.

Ross Wilson said the introduction of the Code was welcomed by the CTU but he warned that the Code will only work if it is taken more seriously than the current ACC complaints services.

“The CTU sought effective remedies against ACC for failing to comply with the new Code, but they have not been included,” he said.

“That means there is a potential problem with the Code not having enough teeth.”

Ross Wilson said the CTU would monitor the effectiveness of the Code over the next 12 months.
