Business Attack On Employment Court Unjustified

“The EMA (Northern) call for the abolition of the Employment Court is at best tired rhetoric and at worst an unjustified personal attack on Chief Judge Goddard,” Council of Trade Unions president Ross Wilson said today.

EMA Northern spokesperson Peter Tritt today called for the abolition of the Employment Court in response to a speech last year by Chief Judge Goddard in which he substantiated his case that compensation awards in personal grievance cases are too low.

“The Chief Judge, in a scholarly paper to an Employment Law Institute meeting, provided clear evidence that Employment Tribunal and Authority awards have been miserly,” Ross Wilson said.

“This is widely acknowledged in the legal profession and many current compensation awards are not even covering legal costs.

“It is typical of Peter Tritt’s attacks to be directed at the messenger rather than address the serious substantive issue which has been raised.”
