Statistics New Zealand Mäori Scholar for 2003

Vicki Kimberley (Ngäti Raukawa), a second-year student at Massey University, Palmerston North, is the winner of Statistics New Zealand’s Te Tari Tatau Scholarship for 2003.

The annual scholarship, worth $3,500 a year for up to three years, is awarded to a Mäori tertiary student, preferably studying mathematics or statistics.

Vicki Kimberley is studying for a Bachelor of Information Science degree, majoring in statistics and information systems, and has included Mäori language in her study programme.

Government Statistician Brian Pink said the overall calibre of scholarship applicants was impressive. “I congratulate Vicki on her success and wish her well with her studies,” he said.

The scholarship seeks to increase the number of Mäori qualified in statistics and to increase the number of statistically-qualified Mäori employed by Statistics New Zealand.

The scholarship winner is expected to spend six weeks in paid vacation employment with Statistics New Zealand each year.
