Beekeepers Urged to Return Sticky Boards
Beekeepers are urged to return their sticky board to the Varroa Programme Group by 12 May.
New Zealand Bee Industry Chairman Milton Jackson says the information gathered from the sticky boards will provide vital information to the Varroa Programme Group (VPG) who are developing the Varroa Pest Management Strategy. The VPG are meeting on 19 May to consider the results gathered from this exercise.
"A random selection of North Island beekeepers have been sent sticky boards by AgriQuality over the past month to help identify how far varroa has spread within the North Island.
"The VPG, established to consider long term management of the pest, is looking at ways of keeping the mite out of the South Island and slowing the spread of Varroa to areas in the North Island not currently infested.
"If left uncontrolled Varroa could have an economic impact in the South Island of between $198 and $434 million over the next 32 years and have major implications for the viability of pastoral farming."
