Mercury Energy signs payment agreement with AMEX

Energy retailer Mercury Energy has today announced it will offer American Express as a payment method for its gas and electricity charges from 1 November 2003.

To mark the deal, Mercury will give away one million American Express reward points to a new or existing customer who sets up and pays their Mercury Energy bill with an American Express card between 1 November 2003 and 30 January 2004.

Sales and Marketing Manager Ian Moody says offering American Express is another way Mercury can add greater value to customers.

"Particularly for small to medium enterprises, the option of being able to accrue points from a reward programme with a broad range of partners, for simply paying for your core monthly expenses is a very attractive option."

The Million Points offer is available to customers who set up recurring American Express payments, plus these customers will also benefit from Mercury Energy's monthly 10% prompt payment discount.

Mercury Energy is the only energy retailer in New Zealand to offer payment by all leading credit card providers: American Express, Visa, MasterCard and Diners Club.

American Express Director of Merchant Services, Stephen Powell, says he is excited about the partnership with Mercury Energy, which has over 280,000 customers.

"This offers greater utility to our card members who increasingly use their cards for everyday spend. They can earn valuable reward points on a regular item of expenditure."

The partnership with Mercury Energy is the first time American Express has used its newly launched Express Billing platform.
