Contact Energy Lights Up Taupo Lakefront

Contact Energy Limited is to fund lighting along a 100 metre section of the main Taupo lake front to improve safety for local residents and visitors.

Contact Energy’s chief executive, Mr Steve Barrett volunteered the funding during a recent meeting with Taupo District Council when he was told of a decision to install lighting in the area as part of an on-going improvement programme.

“Contact Energy is happy to assist the Council in improving the safety of the lakefront at night with our donation of $20,000 to new lighting.”

Contact’s donation will meet the full cost of the lighting, which has been installed by the Taupo District Council in time for the busy holiday period. Four floodlights have been mounted on poles to light the cliff face.

Contact Energy’s Generation Manager Murray Stanley said “As an energy company and operator of the local Wairakei geothermal power station, we are pleased to be able to show our commitment to the Taupo community in this way. The new lighting, along with other safety measures being introduced by the Council should greatly enhance visibility and safety on the lakefront.”

Taupo Mayor Clayton Stent welcomed Contact Energy’s support. “Contact Energy’s generous donation will make a significant difference to safety at night on the lakefront. The area is popular with both residents and visitors and we are extremely grateful for their support in making this happen.”

Contact Energy is New Zealand’s largest generator of geothermal energy and operates the Wairakei, Ohaaki and Poihipi geothermal plants north of Taupo.
