Sales of IT Goods and Services Decrease

Sales of information technology (IT) goods and services (excluding communication services) were $7.0 billion for the 2003 financial year, according to Statistics New Zealand's Information Technology Survey. This is a 1 percent decrease from the 2002 financial year.

Total exports of IT goods and services (excluding communication services) decreased 30 percent to $677 million in the 2003 financial year. This decrease is mainly the result of a 39 percent decrease in exports of communication hardware and cables, and a 33 percent decrease in exports of computer services.

In the 2003 financial year, sales of IT goods and services to New Zealand end-users increased by 2 percent to reach $4.4 billion. This increase was mainly the result of a $56 million increase in sales of computer services and a $40 million increase in sales of computer hardware. These increases were largely offset by a $79 million decrease in sales of communication hardware and cables to New Zealand end-users.

The Information Technology Survey mainly covers businesses that are engaged in the computer wholesaling, telecommunications and computer services industries. Businesses that engaged two or fewer full-time equivalent employees are excluded from the survey.
