Total container volumes* for the 12 months to end-September 2004 were up 1% to 658,315 TEUs (as compared to the 12 months to end-September 2003) and down 18% on September 2003.

Full import container volumes rose 3% and full export container volumes were down 1% for the 12 months to end-September 2004. For the month of September 2004, full import and full export container volumes were down 9% and 15% respectively on September 2003.

Transhipment** volumes were unchanged for the 12 months to end-September 2004 and down 39% for the month of September.
The September volumes were significantly adversely affected by strike action and the disruption to some shipping services caused by events in other parts of the world.

Containers comprise approximately 70% of Ports of Auckland's throughput and about 85% of business activity.
Breakbulk (non-containerised) volumes were up 7% to 4.8 million tonnes for the 12 months to end-September 2004. September volumes were up 38% on September 2003, due primarily to a near-record month for imported used vehicles.

First quarter volumes
Total container volumes were down 2% for the first quarter of Ports of Auckland's new financial year (July to September 2004) to 161,366 TEUs as compared to the first quarter in 2003 (165,221 TEUs). The four-day strike and disruption to trades due to events in other parts of the world more than accounted for the reduction.

Full import container volumes were unchanged and full export container volumes were up 1%. Transhipment volumes were down 26%. Breakbulk volumes were up 22%.
