Sizzling Hot Snarler Success For Little Boys

A Duck and Porcini sausage from “Little Boys” was today (22 November) judged the Supreme Winner in the 2004 Great New Zealand Sausage Competition.

Jeremy Schmid, of Te Aroha’s “Little Boys”, took top honours from among more than 400 entries.

His gourmet creation was shortlisted down to one of eight gold medal-winning finalists - all of which were in the running for overall top honours.

Jeremy’s award winning creation is the result of four months development, he describes it as tasting like duck with a subtle but discernable porcini mushroom after taste.

“The winning sausage was well made, interesting and imaginative” said Head Judge Kerry Tyack. “It is of a comparable standard to the best in the world”.

Simon Holst commented that “the entry from “Little Boys” was a great example of innovation working”.

In its 10th year and organised by Retail Meat New Zealand, competition judging on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 November determined the eight gold medal winners. The Grand Final was held today at Wellington’s Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa.

As in previous years, entrants competed across eight categories. This year’s winners are listed after each category:

Pure Beef – Brookfield New World, Tauranga Pure Pork – Fishers Meats, Dunedin Pre-cooked/BBQ – Westmeat, Wellington Saveloy/Polony/Cocktail – Westmeat, Wellington Flavoured – Heller Tasty Ltd, Canterbury Traditional (Luscutto Beer) - Westmeat, Wellington International (Luscutto Thuringer Bratwurst) – Westmeat, Wellington Gourmet (Duck & Porcini) – “Little Boys”, Te Aroha

Retail Meat New Zealand General Manager, Stephen Macaulay, says “this year’s continued high standard of entrants reinforces the skill and pride that butchers take in their specialist trade.”

“Not only does the Great New Zealand Sausage Competition get the creative juices flowing, it shows the smallgoods craft is exciting, innovative and especially competitive in New Zealand.

“With more than 400 entries in this year’s competition, we’ve been treated to some stunning sausages with the winners almost guaranteed an upsurge in sales following their success here.

“Kiwis love the huge variety of sausages now on the market and everyone will want to see and taste for themselves what makes for a winning entry”, said Macaulay.

Of the Grand Finalists Kerry Tyack said that “any one of the final eight could have taken out the supreme award”. “I would happily serve any of these eight sausages to my discerning guests.”

Loish Daish, well known food writer commented that “the standard of finalists was very high and was increasing every year”.

Devro Pty Ltd is once again the principal sponsor for the competition. Devro is a world leader in the development, production and marketing of collagen casings for sausages. The competition is also supported by Kerry Ingredients and Globus Group NZ Ltd.
