21 December 2004

Maori Television Announces Appointment Of Chief Executive

Maori Television Chairman Wayne Walden has today announced the appointment of Jim Mather (Ngati Awa) to the role of Chief Executive.

Mr Walden said the appointment of Mr Mather was exceptional news for the channel, which launched on 28 March this year to a strong favourable public response.

“The Board is delighted to appoint a Chief Executive of Jim’s calibre. His leadership, strategic ability, proven management strength, financial experience and team approach will serve Maori Television well as it continues to develop as a high performing, successful indigenous channel,” said Mr Walden.

Mr Mather has held the role of Chief Executive of the Pacific Business Trust in Auckland since 2002. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the Henley Management College in England, one of the world's leading business schools, and a Bachelor of Business Studies.

His business management experience spans over 15 years. As Chief Executive of the Pacific Business Trust he is credited with leading the turn-around of this government-mandated business support services organisation focused on developing the entrepreneurial skills of Pacific Island New Zealanders.

In his time with the Trust Mr Mather has successfully commercialised its activities, expanded the Trust to become a national organisation with three additional offices nationwide, re-established the national office into a business centre, established organisational alliances and developed strong working relationships with stakeholder groups, and developed and led a highly skilled team of staff. In the 12-month period to 30 June 2004 alone, the Pacific Business Trust helped establish 54 new Pacific businesses and directly assisted 393 firms to either develop further or remain in business.

Mr Mather is also a former officer in the New Zealand Army, and was awarded the Sword of Honour in recognition of his distinguished achievements in Officer Training.

Mr Mather is honoured and humbled to be appointed to the position: “I have monitored the progress of Maori Television since its launch earlier this year and it is outstanding. I believe the time is right for me to apply the strategic planning, management and leadership skills I have to continue to drive the channel towards achieving its full potential,” said Mr Mather.

“I look forward to this challenge, and to having the opportunity to build the team and work with them in encouraging all New Zealanders to value and embrace te reo and tikanga Maori.”

Mr Mather commences in the role on 14 February 2005.
