Cabbage Patch Kids have been discovered growing wild on an otherwise ordinary cabbage farm south of Auckland.

The farmer, Howe Young of Young Wah Chong farm south of Pukekohe, is baffled as to how an otherwise ordinary field of cabbages could suddenly start sprouting Cabbage Patch Kids.

Equally baffled is Jeremy Kirk-Smith from Planet Fun, the company that distributes Cabbage Patch Kids – and Cabbage Patch Babies from July onwards – into New Zealand.

"All our Cabbage Patch Kids are raised in the USA and this is the first time any have spontaneously grown in New Zealand to my knowledge," says Mr Kirk- Smith. "It's an amazing development that may mean even more Cabbage Patch Kids will be available this year for New Zealand kids to adopt.

"Last year, more kiwi families gave homes to Cabbage Patch Kids than we could possibly have expected and this year looks like it's going to be even better, especially with Cabbage Patch Kids growing wild."
