NZ Listener wins major publishing award

NZ Listener wins major publishing award

2005 Magazine of the Year – SUPREME AWARD winner

Discerning readers have loved and treasured it for more than 65 years.

Now the publishing industry has honoured the country’s leading current affairs magazine naming the New Zealand Listener the best magazine published in 2004.

The NZ Listener beat seven other category winners to take the Supreme accolade at the Magazine Publishers’ Association Awards dinner in Auckland last night (April 8).

It also won Magazine of the Year in the Current Affairs category.

First published in 1939, NZ Listener is the country's leading current affairs magazine.

Editor Pamela Stirling says the NZ Listener is the ultimate weekly destination for readers who want to keep ahead of the game.

“In a world of the sound bite, dumbing down and information overload, the NZ Listener is the authority, a stronghold of world-class journalism and portrait photography. It never lets you down.

“Every week 333,000 New Zealanders depend on the magazine to challenge and inform them so they can lead debate in their sphere of influence. It’s a readable, topical, lively and entertaining magazine for the whole family.”

The NZ Listener’s political editor Jane Clifton was also named Columnist of the Year in the Current Affairs category.

Also at the awards, NZ Listener’s stablemate the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly took the title of Magazine of the Year in the Mass Market category and its editor and journalists won three additional awards.

Maryvonne Gray was named Journalist of the Year, Sarah-Kate Lynch Columnist of the year and Nicky Pellegrino Editor of the Year.

NZ Magazines publisher Sarah Sandley is “absolutely thrilled” at the success of the company’s publications.

“The wins are testament to the favoured positions both these magazine have in the lives of New Zealanders.

“Our team has worked long and hard for these awards. So much goes in to creating successful weekly publications – from reception desk through writers, sub-editors, designers, advertising, marketing, circulation and customer services.

“This is a great win for a world class team – some people have devoted their entire working lives to the NZ Listener and it is fantastic their passion and dedication has been recognised.

“And readers are responding – our paid circulation increased in 2004, and paid subscriptions for both titles are at an all time high.”

The MPA Magazine of the Year Awards have been running for nine years and the 2005 awards are for issues published in the 2004 calendar year. There were 241 entries across all eight categories.
