Vodafone to partner with
Government in bridging the digital divide
Vodafone has
committed to help the Government implement its strategy to
bridge the digital divide in New Zealand.
In a private meeting earlier today, Communications Minister David Cunliffe outlined his expectations of industry in helping roll out the Government’s Digital Strategy. The strategy is designed to ensure all New Zealanders will benefit from the power of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), including mobile communications.
The Government issued a draft strategy for consultation last June and invited feedback from a cross-section of New Zealanders including industry leaders about the general direction and specific actions in the strategy.
In its submission Vodafone outlined the areas where it could make a valuable contribution by partnering with the Government on specific ICT projects.
Vodafone’s General Manager of Commercial Development, Tom Chignell, said he was encouraged by the opportunity to help implement the Government’s digital strategy.
“We support the community partnership model outlined in the strategy and will work with various Government departments and other parties to give more people confidence and access in using digital services delivered over our mobile network.”
“We’re already working on improving people’s confidence in using our digital mobile services as well as providing a robust secure platform for delivering a wide range of services including financial transactions,” Mr Chignell said.
Vodafone will continue working with the government on several other fronts, including the e-government strategy and the development of regulatory tools that deliver positive and sustainable outcomes for communities, business and government.
“We are keen to work with the Government to ensure regulation reflects advances in technology, while fostering a positive investment environment for the long-term benefit of New Zealanders,” Mr Chignell said.
