Three Win NZYF Scholarships
Anna Paton of Oamaru, Hawera's Elizabeth Barkla, and Katherine Tomalin from Putaruru are the winners of the New Zealand Young Farmers' World Congress Charitable Trust scholarships for 2005.
Anna Paton, 29, was awarded a university scholarship worth up to $1,500. An active past member of New Zealand Young Farmers, Anna is completing a masters of applied science in farm management consultancy at Lincoln University. Anna's diverse career to date includes working and studying in the fashion industry in Brisbane, dairy farming, and working as an artificial insemination technician. Now Anna aims to gain employment in the farm management/advisory field.
Elizabeth Barkla, 24, was also awarded a university scholarship worth up to $1,500. Elizabeth is in her second year studying for a diploma in farm management. As a member of Aorangi Young Farmers, Elizabeth made it through to the Aorangi regional final of The National Bank Young Farmer Of The Year contest. Elizabeth hopes to pursue a career in dairy farm management, banking or farm consultancy.
A polytechnic scholarship worth up to $750 was awarded to 18-year-old Katherine Tomalin from Putaruru. Katherine is studying for a National Certificate in Agriculture at Telford Rural Polytechnic, near Balclutha. Katherine hopes to pursue farm work and eventually own and manage a cattle stud.
The Young Farmers World Congress Charitable Trust is administered by New Zealand Young Farmers. The Trust was formed in 1989 to distribute revenue from the investment of profits from the World Congress of Young Farmers held in Christchurch in 1985.
