Mum scoops double business award

What started from the spare bedroom with an old lap top computer, a phone and fax machine for single mother of two Karen Scott has culminated in scooping two top awards at the Her Business ‘businesswoman of the year’ finals held in Auckland on Friday.

Scooping both the ‘best new business’ and the ‘most inspirational role model’ categories, Karen Scott, managing director and founder of Tots to Teens Ltd says she was shocked but delighted at the announcement.

Karen said; “ My very first issue of Tots to Teens was put together from the spare bedroom using an old lap top computer, a phone and a fax machine. I couldn’t afford to hire staff so I did everything from selling advertising to putting together the magazine myself. It was an enormously steep learning curve with many challenges. I didn’t have publishing experience but what I did have was passion, commitment and the greatest motivation a woman could have, two wonderful children to care for. These awards make me feel very proud of what I have achieved for them and I hope this will encourage other Mums to pursue their dreams and ambitions.”

In just short of two years, Tots to Teens is now the highest distributing parenting magazine in New Zealand with a circulation of 130,000 copies per issue with regional editions in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. In addition to the recent acquisition of Kids New Zealand a website and parenting directory there are plans to capitalize on the success by moving into a number of other areas in the near future.

The Her Business ‘businesswoman of the year’ awards are in their 8th year and recognise the accomplishments of women in business. They acknowledge the positive difference women are making to the economy and the community.
