Synergy targets Barmy Army for new recruits

Media release 13 June 2005

Synergy targets Barmy Army for new recruits

Business is booming for IT services company Synergy International, but with an industry-wide skills shortage, the company has decided to launch its own eye-catching recruitment campaign targeting the Barmy Army in Auckland and Wellington.

“Business has never been better so the invasion of the Barmy Army is a brilliant recruiting opportunity for us,” said Synergy’s Chief Executive and British ex-pat, Jim Donovan. The majority of the Barmy Army are educated and highly-skilled, and chances are many are in IT. If not, they’ll know someone back home who is.”

Synergy has 23 vacancies to fill from senior project managers to software developers. To go beyond conventional recruitment approaches, Synergy came up with something that was a little outside the square, which they hope will attract many enquires.

Wearing specially created, lime green suits with the words “If you work in IT, we need you. Ask here’, emblazoned across them, the mobile and inventive campaign will be hard to miss.

The suits, worn by Synergy staff, will be out and about in the lead up to the Auckland and Wellington games and will be visible at city tourist spots, the CBD and Wellington Airport’s baggage carousels.

Interested prospects can call the 0800 recruitment hotline to arrange an interview, and with Synergy waiting on accreditation from the Immigration Service, the immigration process should be made less complicated for any potential new employee.

For those who have friends or family working in IT back in the UK, ‘we need you’ postcards will be handed out for visitors to send back home.

“It’s a fun campaign but it has a serious purpose and we’re hopeful it will help resolve our IT skills shortage,” said Mr Donovan.

Notes to the reporter:
· Synergy was established in 1992 and has offices in Auckland, Wellington, Singapore and London
· Of the 230+ staff, there are 60 staff who identify themselves as foreign nationals – around half are British or Irish. Representatives from a further 18 nations are on staff.
· Around 2500 IT jobs are currently being advertised on Seek, highlighting the extent of the skills shortage for the industry in New Zealand.
