New Wool Scholarships available

New Wool Scholarships available

The New Zealand Wool Industry Charitable Trust and Wool Research Organisation of New Zealand have announced new scholarships for people studying towards careers in the wool industry.

Mike Petersen, chairman of the Trust and the Wool Research Organisation of NZ says the scholarships are available to Post-Doctorate, PhD and Undergraduate students undertaking research and the main purpose is to promote the wool industry as a viable career option for young people.

"The decision to offer scholarships was a relatively easy one. We want to promote the wool industry as a great industry to work in and we want to continue to develop high calibre, researchers and scientists for the industry.

"These scholarships represent the investment we're making in the industry's future, and will enable the wool industry to continue to be a significant contributor to the economy," he said.

Petersen says the scholarships will give students and researchers an opportunity to advance their careers in the wool industry.

"We have a desire for the wool industry to remain at the cutting edge, and offering these scholarships will help to keep us there in the future. The scholarship recipients will need to be able to perform at a high level and show a real passion for research and the industry "he said.

The scholarships will be offered at three levels. Post Doctoral students, researching innovative projects on topics related to wool, in conjunction with Canesis at a New Zealand University, for a period of one to three years. The PhD scholarship has the same criteria and will be offered for three years. The Undergraduate scholarship will be offered to students working towards a degree at an overseas university offering an approved textile science degree programme

Petersen says the scholars will be selected on their academic ability, commitment to their course of study, the wool industry and their ability to work as a team player.

Meat & Wool New Zealand is managing the scholarship programme on behalf of the Wool Research Organisation of New Zealand and the NZ Wool Industry Charitable Trust.
