Working Conditions Create Good Learning

MEDIA RELEASE

Good Kindergarten Working Conditions Create Good Learning Conditions Says CTU

"The working conditions of kindergarten teachers create the learning conditions, and employer moves to significantly increase teacher contact time will negatively impact on teaching and learning in our kindergartens," said Ross Wilson, CTU President.

The Council of Trade Unions is supporting strike action today by kindergarten teachers, members of the New Zealand Educational Institute Te Riu Roa, after negotiations with the Ministry of Education and employers broke down.

"The unions have problems with both what the employers are proposing, and the way they are going about it," said Ross Wilson. "Kindergarten teachers have made it clear that they are more than willing to work with families on their concerns for longer hours, but imposing a blanket increase in contact hours from the top is not helpful," said Ross Wilson.
