Unions will campaign on Youth Rates Private Members Bill

The Council of Trade Unions will be campaigning for political party support for Green MP Sue Bradford's private members bill which will abolish youth rates, if it is drawn from the ballot.

"We certainly hope that Sue Bradford's bill will be draw from the ballot some time in this term of Parliament," said Carol Beaumont, CTU Secretary. "Parliament needs to debate youth rates, and the public to have their say through select committee.

"As the SuperSizeMyPay and other campaigns have shown, young workers are not happy with being paid inferior rates to their older workmates. There is no reason why a 16 year old doing the same work as a 19 year should not have wage parity."

"The CTU supports fair pay for a fair day's work, and we will be campaigning for the abolishment of youth rates. We hope that Sue Bradford's Bill will be drawn from the ballot, so that Parliament can consider this important issue also."
