Grandma’s Feather Bed Back In Fashion

Media Release

30th April 2006

Grandma’s Feather Bed Back In Fashion

Avis Nelson’s grandma would be astonished to know that an updated version of her feather bed is amongst today’s celebrity must-haves and features at top international hotels and luxury lodges.

The HouseHold Linens founder used to spend her school holidays at her grandmother’s Waitara home under the shadow of Mount Taranaki and during the hot summers would sleep on top of what she called a feather shake and in the cold winter she’d snuggle against its soft warmth.

HouseHold Linens prides itself in providing successful sleeping and often has people coming into the stores who have trouble sleeping.

Avis says: `They kept asking us what to do about it. I always remembered how well I used to sleep on Grandma’s feather shake and decided to recreate those wonderful Taranaki nights. It took 18 months to develop our updated version and while not naming names, it would be fair to say, we’ve had some famous faces go home with it.’

The HouseHold Linens feather shake is the original New Zealand version of the American featherbed, which is now considered the latest essential luxury item in the states. Which is why one former weather girl, now a star TV presenter, was seen carrying away from HouseHold Linens’ Newmarket store recently. She must have inside knowledge on what sort of winter we have ahead.

Grandma’s feather shakes are back in vogue for the same reasons they were popular in the first place: filled with 100 per cent goose down they’re lightweight, they promote comfortable sleep and they regulate body temperature.

Medical research has confirmed just how important a sound night’s sleep is to overall good health, promoting the new cells, minimising stress, and refreshing the mind and body.

Avis adds: `The feather shake fits over the mattress and transforms it. Some people say it’s like sleeping on a cloud. Using a feather shake can also help reduce energy bills. It provides warmth during the winter months by trapping body heat; and because air is able to circulate through its loft, a feather shake will also keep you cool in summer.’

The feather shake originated in Northern Europe, before migrating to America with the early settlers. Scandinavians and Germans have been sleeping on feather shakes for centuries--and with a primary food source of duck and geese--the theory is that some thinking person decided to put the down and feathers to good use. The result was the comfortable feather shake.
