Students will be making a splash at Peria Primary School, in the Far North’s Doubtless Bay, after their swimming pool upgrade gained a grant from community funder the ASB Trusts.
The $68,388 grant will help upgrade the swimming pool, which the Trusts recognise as an important gathering place for the community. The latest grant means the trust has put around $150,000 into the school in the past seven years.
Other Northland
schools have also benefited, with an adventure playground
and library improvements among projects approved in the
latest round of grants.
Waima Primary School gets $13,775
for its library upgrade, bringing the trusts’ total grants
to the school to around $100,000 in the past 10 years.
Meanwhile part of a $66,177 grant to Whirinaki’s Te Kura
Kaupapa Maori O Te Tonga O Hokianga will also be spent on a
library upgrade, as well as a new playground.
ASB Trusts CEO Jennifer Gill said the library grants are among many made to schools throughout Auckland and Northland for library upgrades each year.
“It’s the programme of which I am most proud,” she says. “It’s totally low-key, but in the period 2001-2004 the ASB Trusts have spent over $10 million providing library books to schools in our region.”
Kaeo
School gets a grant of $38,806 toward its new adventure
playground, bringing total ASB Trusts’ total grants to the
school to around $115,000.
In Kaitaia, Te Roopu Whanau
Kohanga Reo gets $51,776 to help furnish and equip its new
facility.
The ASB Trusts decide on grants to community groups each month. At their April meeting trustees approved grants for projects in education, the arts, sport, recreation, health and social services areas. It is part of about $50 million given to community groups in Auckland and Northland each year.
Founded on the sale of shares in the ASB bank, the ASB Trusts have granted more than $400m since being formed in 1988. Any incorporated or charitable trust can apply for funds, provided they are a not-for-profit organisation. For more details about applying, visit the ASB Trusts’ website: www.asbtrusts.org.nz
The Bay of Island Vintage Railway Trust’s plans to redevelop the railway station and yards at Kawakawa have been given a shunt in the right direction with a $176,500 grant from the ASB Trusts.
The
funds will go toward upgrading the maintenance shed, part of
a plan to turn the historic rail line into a focal point for
Northland tourism by restoring and operating a vintage steam
railway experience between Kawakawa and Opua.
ASB Trusts
CEO Jennifer Gill said her organisation’s support is based
on the project’s potential to strengthen Kawakawa’s tourism
industry, which in turn will advance the economic and social
well-being of the area.
“The ASB Trusts hope this grant will be a catalyst to enable this project to move forward,” she said.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the vintage railway trust’s line, a $206,050 ASB Trusts grant will help the Opua Cruising Club build new clubrooms.
The funds will also help the club buy three new sailing dinghies and a safety boat to help supervise the club’s 50 young sailors while they are out in the club’s fleet.
