TRENZ 2006 - the $2 billion event

Business worth an estimated $2 billion to New Zealand’s economy will be generated by the country’s largest annual tourism event, TRENZ (Tourism Industry Rendezvous New Zealand), in Christchurch next week (12-15 June).

More than 400 New Zealand tourism businesses will gather at the Westpac Centre for three days of intensive business activity.

They will meet with a similar number of international travel and tourism buyers arriving from 33 countries to purchase accommodation, transport, attractions and activities at wholesale rates, and include them in holiday brochures and itineraries for forthcoming seasons.

More than 1500 people, including over 60 international and New Zealand media, are expected to attend the event and associated networking functions.

TRENZ 2006 in numbers:

- 8500 square metres of undercover exhibition space is needed, including 4000 square metres of marquee space

- 51 business meetings are scheduled for each delegate during TRENZ 2006

- 765 minutes (12.75 hours) – the length of time each delegate will spend in 15-minute business meetings during TRENZ 2006

- 13,000 cups of coffee and tea will be drunk during TRENZ 2006

- 1025 litres of LPG and 3300 litres of diesel required to heat the giant marquee

- 13,700 lunches, morning and afternoon teas will be served.
“Tourism is New Zealand’s largest single foreign exchange earning industry, with international visitors now contributing $7.4 billion a year to the economy,” Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIA) Chief Executive Fiona Luhrs says.
