Fuel Specifications Review


The Motor Industry Association while welcoming the Government’s announcement that the levels of sulphur in petrol and diesel are to be reduced questioned why a decision to go to sulphur free petrol has had to be delayed.

“New Zealand is now part of the global vehicle market and we must therefore ensure that our fuels are to international standards so that new car importers can bring to New Zealand the latest, cleanest, fuel efficient models available. It is therefore important that we move to having sulphur free petrol and diesel at the earliest possible opportunity” said Mr Kerr, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association.

Mr Kerr went onto say “that he understood that Marsden Point could produce sulphur free petrol but that the oil companies have raised the bogey of regional security as justification to continue to import petrol with up to 50 parts per million from inefficient refineries in Australia. We should in fact be demanding the world’s best and if necessary the oil companies should be sourcing sulphur free petrol from refineries in Asia and elsewhere to meet our needs that cannot be supplied directly by Marsden Point” concluded Mr Kerr.
