Median, Average & Aggregate Up at Final Session

Median, Average & Aggregate Up at Final Session of NZB 2006 National Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale

New Zealand Bloodstock's National Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale concluded at Karaka today with the final 189 of the 300 broodmares catalogued for Sale.

Previously conducted together with the Weanling Sale in May, the Broodmare Sale's new August time slot looked a positive move as the Sale's average and aggregate surpassed last year's figures.

Total turnover for the Sale was NZ$2,946,150 for 257 lots sold, with an overall average of NZ$11,464.

Over the two-day Sale, a total of 194 broodmares sold for an average of NZ$12,927 and an aggregate of NZ$2,507,750. This reflected a 47% increase in average price from NZ$8,794 last year, and a 68% increase in aggregate from NZ$1,495,050 for just 24 more lots sold this year. The median also rose a huge 138% to NZ$5,350 from NZ$2,250 at the Broodmare Sale in 2005.

The disappointment of the day was the Broodmare Session clearance rate which finished at 70%. Combined with the mixed session clearance of 86% this made for an overall clearance rate for the Sale of 72.6%.

NZB Marketing Manager, Petrea Vela, said there were mixed results over the course of the past two days. "We had a full spectrum of quality catalogued at this Sale and, true to current trends, those horses with commercial appeal sold well but it was tough going for less appealing pedigrees. The shocking weather conditions deterred a few and it was disappointing to not have found homes for more horses."

"That said, there is a distinct feeling of confidence in the market and it has been encouraging to see a number of new names on the buyers list, no doubt boosted by the recent changes to the depreciation regime for mares in New Zealand. It is also pleasing to see the participation we've had from overseas buyers, particularly buyers from Australia and Korea."

Australian buyers including John Foote, Kieran Moore, Vin Cox, Colm Santry, and Bill Benson's Emerald Thoroughbreds all featured in the results sheets.

After New Zealand Bloodstock as agent with 34 purchases for NZ$367,900, the next leading buyer was Chang Sig Kim's United Bloodstock who bought nine horses for Korean buyers, Mr Yoon and Mr Choi. The highest priced purchase of the nine was Zabeel mare, Island Pearl, at Lot 203, bought for NZ$50,000 in foal to Keeper.

Kieran Moore accounted for the top priced mare of Day 2 when he paid NZ$100,000 for Macanudo (Kingdom Bay x Pas de Course). Carrying a positive test to champion sire Zabeel, the mare is also a half-sister to Real Success, dam of Queensland Oaks winner, Vouvray.

This was not enough, however, to eclipse the top price for the Sale that was set on Day 1 by Lot 95, Angel Layne. The imported Grindstone mare was bought for NZ$135,000 by Stuart Munro.
The leading vendor of the Sale was Brent & Cherry Taylor's Trelawney Stud, with 22 horses sold for an aggregate of NZ$742,200 and average of NZ$33,736. Their draft included the top priced Lot, Angel Layne, owned by Deborah Ho.

Day one's morning session was dedicated to mixed bloodstock with yearlings, two year olds, untried horses and racehorses offered. The mixed stock sessions combined to record a clearance rate of 86%, with 61lots sold for total takings of NZ$402,500 and a combined average of NZ$6,605.

The highlight of the mixed stock came in the Racehorse session, with Zabeel mare, Zeal (ex Namouna by Sadler's Wells) at Lot 48 purchased by prominent Australian bloodstock agent, John Foote, for NZ$80,000. Foote also accounted for the third highest price of that session, a Stravinsky mare out of Gazebo (Snadee) at Lot 70 which he bought for NZ$35,000.
